There’s always more to learn from Mr. Lewisohn. I didn’t realize until hearing this Remo Four cover of “Shimmy Like Kate”(which the Beatles of course regularly covered in Hamburg) that the vocals go “fooey foo.” I’m guessing there’s a direct line between this song and the “fooey foo” backing vocal in “Getting Better.”

I think Mark means Ringo’s first appearance with The Beatles at the December 1961 Christmas Party in Liverpool.
Did Ringo not play informally with The Beatles earlier in Hamburg in 1960?
